Let's get to know our members--Loretta Paraguassu

Los Angeles

Loretta Paraguassu went to the WCA 40^th Conference in LA to represent the WCAGA. She not only did a great job at doing a report on our Chapter but also made a wonderful watercolor illustrating the flowing hills, sky and the bright light.

She writes avidly about shows, artists, art and, life on the WCAGA Facebook page and her blog UncensoredfromAlpharetta as well as her personal website/blog. 

Her personal motto describes her accurately. 

“Living and loving...creating and enjoying...painting, writing, planting and harvesting...those are the joys that make me want to see the sun come up in the morning...as long as it doesn't happen too early.”

Snow in My Heart

With this love for life she reacts to the injustice around her through her words and paintings. In “Snow in My Heart” she expresses her empathy with the Occupy America Protesters who were attacked. The palette knife slashes representing the battering that these occupiers had to endure. The Snow Heart Broken. 

Give me Color! Give me Life

She had a show in the Montfort’s Fine Art Gallery, Alpharetta, GA in November 2011 called “Give Me Color! Give me Life!” Yes, through her work she gives you vibrant color and a breath of life. Her abstractions with lines, strong and decisive.

With Abstractions every viewer can take what they need. Their interpretations differ with their experience. 

One of my favorites artworks is the “Give me Color! Give me Life.” I see fire with stark and dark burned branches. I think Loretta will smile when she reads this last sentence because she has accused me of seeing only the pain.

I think Flora runs with her scissors...

There is a good chance Flora Rosefsky has been caught running with scissors now and then. She does an incredible job of wielding that weapon and turning out pictures that dance and jump and tell stories about Flora's Judaic family past. She admits that she isn't as observant of customs as her parents or grandparents. No, she doesn't light candles every Friday night, but she loves the connections with her past and honors them in her work. Using paper, cloth and ephemera, she creates collages that are simple and complex at the same time. The more you look at them, the more you see. Yet, all of Flora's work has joy and love as an important ingredient. She tells the stories of her family with bits and pieces of materials, some of them taken from something that belonged to that person. One of them has pieces of a copy of her Jewish wedding contract, another has pieces of checks written by her father-in-law. I stopped by yesterday at the Marcus Hillel Center at Emory University where Flora's exhibit in the hall gallery and inside the restaurant will be hanging until the end of March. The big attraction was the artist's discussion of her work. Not only has she done collages. She has created quilts and stained glass window designs, paintings and portraits -- most with a focus on Judaica. Judaica in art is a relatively recent development, Flora explains. "It is contemporary development. The history of Jewish culture is written, it is something we connect with words." Modern artists like Flora are taking the stories into their own hands and giving them images for us to interpret and enjoy.

House of Beauty

In “House of Beauty: It’s about me” the viewers are confronted with skin like inflated faces. It reminds of melting, of skin taken off after cosmetic surgery. It is placed in a tower case as if to say, you can choose the face you want to wear today. 

Ephyrian Circle

The "Sisyphus Project" and "Ephyrian Circle" focus on the useful versus uselessness. The Gods punished Sisyphus by having him push a boulder up a mountain. This sculpture relies on the viewer to participate and pull the rock up, only then does sound and light become a part of the environment. The involvement circles out into the Internet where people can tell about what they see as useless or useful.

News Vortex

Marya Roland is a Professor of Art at Western Carolina University. She asks questions with her art and the viewer answers and takes part in her inviting work. Whether it is with their bodies or minds, most of the time you are asked to use both. Her "News Vortex" is a prickly cactus-like monster made of newspapers, capable of devouring people.

Appearances/Web and Blog

We are looking for graphic design members who would help coordinate the look of our web
site with the blog.

Photos Requested

Kate is always looking for photos for the Newsletter. That also serves to archive them since the
documents are saved.

Drawing Marathon

Marathons will happen multiple times throughout the year at different sites, starting with the
first one in March. Results of the marathons may be shown at an Art Share late in the summer
or early fall. Details to come; check the web site, blog and/or Facebook. Barb Rehg, Chair.

Art Share

We are looking for a new chair to organize the Art Shares. Susan Ker-Seymer has done a great
job of chairing for the last year (or more) and would like to step down. For more information,
contact Judy Parady or Susan Ker-Seymer.

Book Club

Turnout increases! Next is March 18 at Vicki Martin+s house. See the February Newsletter (link
on the web site) or blog for details.

National Juried Exhibit

If you want to be a part of this you should contact Barb Rehg, Exhibits Chair, and join the
Exhibits Committee. Expect a national call for entries in 2013. Our working title is -Material
Witness+. The juror has not yet been selected. There will be a catalogue. To process the entries,
should we use a commercial online service like CafÄ?

The Little Red Journal

This is a national project that we have decided to participate in. One of the national chapters
started this; one book goes around the country and artists in that chapter fill the pages in
their section. It will come to us in September but you can start working on a piece before then
to attach to the page. It+s very small (art no larger than 4+h x 3+w x 1/4+thick), but some are
doing fold-outs. 29 members can participate. Sign-up will begin on March 3 at Midnight via
email to Barb Rehg, and getting a spot is first-come, first-served. There will be an email reminder
notice the Monday before March 3, and another Mail Chimp email will go out when all
29 spaces are reserved. Eventually the finished book will be auctioned off at the WCA National
Conference in NYC in 2013. See web site and/or blog for more.

Funding Guidelines

We voted on and approved guidelines for granting funds in response to individual artists+
requests for help with specific projects.

NEW BUSINESS

Representative to the Chapters Council at the National Board Meetings

WCA National requests that a designated -chapter representative+ (as opposed to also being
the President or other officer of the chapter) attend the winter National Board meeting
as part of the -Chapters Council+ to present information about what our chapter is doing. It+s
always held at the National WCA Conference. From that body, three people are elected to be
part of the national board; if elected, you would also be expected to go to the summer board
meeting. We may be able to provide a small stipend to offset the travel expenses of a WCAGA
representative. Please contact Judy Parady or Ann Rowles if interested.

Attracting Younger Members

It was suggested that we should be making more efforts to attract more young women
members. There is a relatively new national initiative for younger members, the Young WC, an
internal caucus of the National Women+s Caucus for Art with a focus on college students and
young professionals. (See their program listing for the 2012 WCA Conference.) It was agreed
that we have much to offer but we need to address topics of interest to young artists. How to
do it? To start, ask the young artists that you know.

Going Global with WCA

I attended the International Meeting at the WCA Annual Conference in L.A. last week and came away very impressed by the possibilities. I took notes and have promised to write up a report. We can share ideas about the projects under the blog posts on the website. Again, let me know if you'd like me to start another post/topic on the blog. I want to keep the communication flowing! INTERNATIONAL CAUCUS PROJECT TASKS/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AS OF 3/1/2012 1. Encourage all current WCA members, who wish to be in the International Caucus (IC), update/designate International Caucus in their Member Profiles in the Member Directory of the WCA website - SHERRI 2. Create the WCA International Caucus website with a blog, background information, up-to-date member list, etc. - SHERRI 3. Talk to Yueh-Mei Cheng about future possibilities in Taiwan and Beijing 4. Research the art exhibition that happened at the 1995 UN World Conference on Women (WCW) in Beijing by speaking with WCA members who were involved: Liz Dodson, Eleanor Dickenson, Carol Kaufman, Cherie Relinger, Muriel Magenta... Purpose: to use as we develop a relationship with the next WCW efforts and collect suggestions for improvement 5. Collect WCA Art & Activism projects and data for the Art & Activism Database by 1) reading posts on the WCA facebook page (going back to the beginning of 2012 and through late fall), 2) reading the print & e-versions of the WCA newsletter, 3) contacting WCA chapter directors to share data entry form, 4) following up to get digital documentation links (PDFs, websites, JPEGs, etc), and 5) write up short descriptions of completed projects for the WCA Facebook page and for the WCA newsletters. 6. Work with Hye-Seong Lee on the proposal for a collaborative exhibition in Gwangju, Korea in September. (One of the most immediate steps is to identify a well-known curator to co-curate this with Hye-Seong. Priscilla has some ideas for this.) - SHERRI & 7. Begin brainstorming about a budget to present to the WCA board in July. (Exhibition support from WCA? Fundraising ideas to support exhibitions, travel subsidies for IC members to attend UN events/international exhibitions? ...) -SHERRI & 8.
