Picturing Home: Friends of Emory Visual Arts Juried Photography Exhibition
Emory Visual Arts Gallery
December 3, 2009 - January 29, 2010

Entry fee: $35 (includes membership in Friends of Emory Visual Arts)

Jurors: Julian Cox, curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and Jason Francisco, associate professor of photography and chair of the Visual Arts Department at Emory University

What is home, and where is it? What does it mean to look for home, to find home, to lose home, to be at home? In whose company does home arise? Under what circumstances? At what cost? How is “home” being impacted by the current economic crisis in America? The Visual Arts Gallery at Emory University invites submissions to a juried photography exhibition on these and related issues: images (and combinations of images and words) that investigate, comment on and test various dimensions of “home”—in its familiarity and unfamiliarity, its pleasures and discomforts, its communal and personal aspects.

7th Biennial Georgia Perimeter Sculpture Exhibit
Call for Artists
January 25 - March 5, 2010

No entry fee, no commissions — entries can be submitted by mail or e-mail.

Slides or digital image files on a CD or emailed are all acceptable if sent with a completely filled-out, signed/dated entry form. Please provide SASE for return of slides/CD. Entered work will be reviewed from both photographic images and live viewings when possible, with the selection process and acceptances occurring during the final months of 2009 through January 12, 2010

Due to space considerations, accepted submissions will be limited to one sculpture or installation per artist with no more than twenty sculptors accepted in total. Work must be able to be installed on the grounds of the campus in specified existing sites with minimal impact upon the existing landscape, and the site must be restored by the artist to it’s original state at the close of the exhibit. Work must remain on site for the duration of the exhibit period, and the work shall be non-hazardous for viewers and able to withstand the effects of exposure to the weather for the six week duration of the exhibit. The sculptor’s choice of installation in specific available sites will be on a first-come, first serve basis in subject to the approval of both GPC Fine Arts Department and Landscaping and Grounds personnel.

The work will be installed at the sculptor’s risk — as the work will be installed in public space there will be no insurance coverage, though it should be noted that campus security does make regular patrols day and night.

October - January ongoing submission proposals reviewed for exhibit. Click here for more information and a prospectus.

Diane Solomon Kempler

LECTURE TO CELEBRATE RE-INSTALLATION OF OLYMPIC COMMISSION

Atlanta, GA, October 13, 2009 - Visitors to Freedom Park near North Avenue will notice a new addition to the landscape: Diane Solomon Kempler’s 1996 Olympic sculpture commission “New Endings.” To celebrate the newly completed re-installation, the Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia (WCAGA) will sponsor an Artist’s Lecture and reception at Emory University to honor Kempler and better acquaint the public with the range of her work.

Kempler will discuss the influence of her travels and artist residencies; frequent international travel awards and residencies have brought her in contact with cultures, ideas, and craftspeople from around the world. Reviewing Kempler’s recent exhibit “Divine Chaos” Russell Cook described her work as an “attempt to conjure the intangible from the corporeal, using the earth to call the heavens.”

Diane Solomon Kempler has been active as an artist and teacher for over 20 years. Born in New York City, she graduated with a degree in philosophy from Brandeis University and subsequently studied Architecture at Harvard University and Ceramics at Penland Center for Crafts. An influential teacher and mentor, Kempler is on the Emory Visual Arts faculty and taught ceramic sculpture at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center for many years. She was a founder of the Atlanta Women’s Art Collective and gave the first public program for the newly formed Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia in 2001.

As a project of the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta (CODA), Kempler created and installed the bronze fountain sculpture called “New Endings,” in downtown Atlanta in 1996. The sculpture has been relocated to Freedom Park near the intersection of Euclid and North Avenues and will be rededicated in a ceremony held at the site on October 22, at 11:30am.

Both events are free and open to the public. Kempler’s lecture will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, November 1, 2009, in the media room at the Emory Visual Arts Building, 700 Peavine Creek Drive, on the Emory University Campus.

The Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia (WCAGA) is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization based in Atlanta. It is a chapter of the National Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA), founded in 1972. WCA is committed to providing opportunities for the exhibition and recognition of women’s work as well as offering educational events for both members and the public.

Artists living in the American South share a particular voice that draws from a combination of unique influences and contradictions. Video entries of all lengths up to 5 minutes with a max of 3 videos per artist, and all genres including, but not limited to: experimental, narrative, documentary, animation. All video works must have been completed no earlier than 2007. “Hot Sauce & Magnolias” will tour at various venues for 2 years. Screening begins in Spring 2010. All video entries must be submitted in data format, NTSC (NO AUTO PLAY or DVD MENUS). Only DVDs can be accommodated.

ARCHIVE
Plugged Art Collective would like to include accepted videos in the online archive on Plugged’s website. The online archive supports Plugged’s mission to make relevant artwork more accessible to the public. In addition the online library will act as host for a global community of artists. Ideally this platform will act as a meeting point for living artists to meet each other’s work and spawn further creativity. Please read “Screening Agreement” below for details.

MISSION
Plugged Art Collective is comprised of multi-media artists who are as diverse as their artwork. Based in the heart of the U.S south, Plugged understands the need to reach out to other artists and the importance of a creative community. Our mission as a group is to bring artists together, provide communities with humorous, thought-provoking, boundary-crossing artwork, and above all make contemporary artwork accessible and significant.
Formed in 2004, Plugged has organized various events ranging from international video festivals, performance & installation festivals, traveling screenings to artist panel discussions. Plugged is proud to keep each event free for artists to submit work and free for the public to attend. The traveling screenings take place at various venues such as universities, commercial galleries, non-profit galleries, artist run galleries, and public outdoor spaces.

WCAGA Members at Emory University Hospital Midtown

This spring, Emory Healthcare invited WCAGA artists to exhibit work during a one-night event highlighting women and heart disease. The event was held April 30, 2009, at Emory University Hospital Midtown (formerly Crawford Long). Featured speakers included doctors, researchers, and heart attack survivors.

Sixteen WCAGA members working in painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media responded to the call for artists, and each exhibited one work. The program was well attended and we received many compliments on the quality of the artwork.

Participating artists were: Aleta Aaron, Helen DeRamus, Ellen Filreis, Beverly Harding, Donna Horn, Marjorie Jordan, Jane Jaskevich, Judy Kuniansky, Chris Lewis, Kathy Meliopoulos, Cindy Michaels, Helen Oller, Barb Rehg, Ann Rowles, Jena Sibille, and Karen Weyandt.

Eyedrum May Soon Call It Quits

Financial straits snare Atlanta’s longest-running all-volunteer nonprofit arts space

ATLANTA — Facing a heavy rent burden and ever-increasing operating expenses, Eyedrum’s board of directors held an emergency meeting Sunday, July 11, to consider the survival of the longtime art and music organization.

The options are few. They include a significant decrease in rent, bringing on other Atlanta-based arts organizations to sublet part of the 6,0000-square-foot space, a move to a smaller space, or an end to the award-winning venue altogether.

Having just celebrated 10 years in October 2008, the demise of Atlanta’s longest-running alternative art and music space would be a huge loss to the Atlanta community. Eyedrum consistently has been a nurturing ground for creativity and progressive thinking in that time.

The Eyedrum music archive, the gallery’s greatest asset next to the people involved, features more than 1,000 shows recorded live over the past 10 years. It is one of the few venues that features – built-out by members of the all-volunteer board – three visual art gallery spaces, and a performance space with a professional-quality sound system with multi-track recording capability.

Eyedrum secured a $30,000 Warhol Foundation curatorial grant in 2006, and is a 10-year Best of Atlanta winner in both music and art categories (Creative Loafing).

These accomplishments were achieved all while operating debt-free – yet another point of achievement considering the nontraditional nature of the organization, and limited grant and sponsorship funding.

The board plans to attempt a negotiation with its landlord, Braden Fellman, later this week, and will reconvene no later than July 26 to discuss any developments on rent reduction, and to consider proposals from other arts organizations. Arts organizations and investors who are interested in partnering with Eyedrum should contact Vice Chairman Allen Welty Green at agmedia@mindspring.com.

Any donations received through Eyedrum’s website (www.eyedrum.org) will be directed toward operating expenses. And while such donations are greatly appreciated, the urgency and severity of Eyedrum’s financial burden cannot be overstated. Without a hefty reduction in overhead costs, a major move – physically or in terms of the organization’s identity – is unavoidable.

________________________________________________________________________
Started in 1998, Eyedrum is a nonprofit organization developing an interdisciplinary approach to the arts by incorporating a wide range of contemporary art, music and new media in its gallery space. The gallery is operated entirely by volunteers, and supported through memberships
and donations. It has been recognized internationally as well as locally by Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs and within the community at large for its advancement of innovation."

Ting Ying Han at Spruill Gallery

Ting Ying Han / Missing / rice / 2008 / 72"x 36" 72"

Detail, Missing

Detail, Missing

Bio:

"Ting Ying Han is a visual artist who was born at Taipei, Taiwan. After finishing a degree in International Shipping and Management, as her parents wished. She decided to leave her family and pursue her dream. Now she resides in Atlanta, Georgia and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta. Han’s work focuses on exploring humanity and the relationship on her personal life events. "

Artist Statement:

"After six years of being in the United States, I have assimilated new ideas through the process of being transplanted from Taiwan. I am driven by the changing and responding influences of both the past and the present. I am interested in how we, as humans, relate to each other; how mental, psychological, emotional, and physical conditions can intersect with lived experiences.

Memories are documents that retain collective visions, myths and beliefs about my homeland and my role as a woman. These memories and relationships within my family are the inspiration and motivation for an open-ended narrative of life. They remain as an inseparable and essential part of my life; this is true even though the new cultural understanding sometimes contradicts the old.

To me, making art is a way of exploring the balance between my past and present selves. This process of physically “making” objects recovers the emotional and psychological aspects of my past. This is the essence of my content. The works explore how malleable our identities are, and how individual perception of reality can influence what is accepted as truth."
