The ideal candidate is a female who is both an artist, animal lover and either practices or appreciates the healing arts. Someone quite and contemplative will be the best fit. If you are a painter, non-toxic mediums are preferred.

The space is a third-floor, 1200 sq ft, quite, safe location. Only two people will share the
studio. There is both private and common space. Twenty-four hour access is possible for
night owls. This is a NON RESIDENTIAL SPACE, work only.

Echo: Variations on a Theme at
Meredith College (presented by WCAGA) - Deadline May 25, 2009:

Exhibition Theme:
Echo: Variations on a Theme provides opportunities for artists to explore and elaborate on the endless possibilities of a specific idea or theme as it unfolds and develops in the artist’s mind. Like the variations on a theme in a musical composition, the artist can revise the composition, color, line, texture, shape or media of the original theme in order to further the inherent conversation or dialogue with the viewer. Working in a series rather than on a single presentation of a theme acknowledges the natural process that ideas undergo as they illuminate, develop, change and give rise to related and new ideas.

Juror:
Ann Roth is gallery director and teaches color theory at Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina. She has held curatorial and administrative positions in universities, non-profit arts organizations and commercial galleries since 1976. She has served as Juror for numerous exhibitions, including the Town of Cary's Lazy Daze Arts Festival, Artspace, the Visual Art Exchange and the Raleigh Arts Commission. Ms. Roth is also a weaver. Her hand dyed and woven rugs have been exhibited at the NC State Craft Center, American Craft Council Southeastern Regional Exhibition and in Meredith College art faculty shows. She received her MFA in textile design from the University of Kansas and her BFA from the University of Michigan.

Requirements for accepted work:
1. All Two-Dimensional work must be appropriately and professionally presented and ready to hang. Information regarding hanging requirements at Meredith’s Gallery will be sent along with notification to accepted artists.
2. Three-Dimensional work must be stable on a flat surface.
3. Include special instructions for installation work, if necessary. Artist must handle any involved installations.

Eligibility:
Current and new members of the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) are invited to submit up to six pieces of original art work. Accepted artists must be a paid-up 2009 WCA member in order to exhibit. The exhibition entry fee does not cover the WCA membership. For new or renewal WCA membership see: www.nationalwca.org

Rules of Entry:
1. Entries will be judged from digital, Jpeg format,300 dpi, size 4” x 6”. A maximum of six works may be submitted in either of the following two formats:
a. One series of 3 to 6 images to form a
thematic body of work
b. Two series of 3 images, each series
to form a thematic body of work

2. Each 2D work may NOT exceed 36” including framed images.

3. All media except video are accepted.
3-D work will be placed close to a wall due to traffic flow through the gallery space. Nothing may be hung from the ceiling.

4. All digital files must be accompanied by an Official Entry Form that lists title, media, size, date and price.

5. Attach a short statement of no more than 150 words about your work as it relates to the exhibition theme.

6. Entries must be received by
May 25, 2009. Late entries will not be considered.

7. There is a $25.00 entry fee.

Artist Statement:

"In our increasingly globalized, chaotic, digital, teeming worlds, I am interested in the idea that universally, cultures overtake and alter the civilizations that precede them. This change can be the result of time, evolution, war, economic and social upheaval, or genocide and it is not always a sign of progress. I want to emphasize this historical process through my artistic process of deconstruction and reconstruction. Using fractured and distorted images of cultural artifacts and of people and their accoutrements, I cut and reorder the elements into a new reality. When I recombine and randomly crop images, I allow for unanticipated new images and compositions.

My current imagery is related to cultures in Greece, Afghanistan, Darfur, and even the United States where civilians are affected by the loss of a way of life they have previously known."

Southern Exposure at Hollingsworth Gallery - Deadline May 25, 2009:

Hollingsworth Gallery presents the group thematic
exhibition, Southern Exposure. The exhibition will be
held at the Hollingsworth Gallery from June 13 – July
5th, 2009. This exhibition is open to all southern artists
who would like to express their heritage, environment,
ideals, and issues concerning the south. Deadline for
submissions is May 25th, 2009.
All artists from the realist to the abstract and conceptual
will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY:
Southern Exposure is open to all artists, working in any media, residing
in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina,
North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Maximum height of work is 84 inches, maximum width is 144 inches.
Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply.

ARTIST WRITTEN MATERIALS:
Artists are required to send in an Artist Statement explaining the content,
subject matter, and process of work. Artists are also asked to submit a
gallery resume and biography. With Images, include an Image List:
number slides or prints and list title, medium, dimensions, and artist
price below.

IMAGE PRESENTATION:
Artwork submitted may be represented by prints up to 8.5" x 11", digital
images on CD, 35mm slides, or by email entry.
Prints: Prints of work (digital or photographic) may be up to 8.5" x
11" but must be accompanied by digital images. Artist name, title,
size, media and price should be on the front or back of the print. If
you want your prints returned, be sure to follow the return of
materials guidelines below.

Images should be in PSD or JPG format. No files larger than 15MB
please. Reference prints must be included. Reference prints may be
any size individual prints up to 8.5" x 11" (label as for prints above)
or may be a single sheet with multiple prints representing the images
on the disc. If submitting a single sheet , next to each image write the
artist, title, media and dimensions. If you submit digital files without
reference prints, your files may not be properly viewed.
Email entry: Digital files sent via email should be in JPG format, 72
dpi and no larger than 12" in any dimension. Send the images and the
entry form image list information in a single zip file as an email
attachment. Include “Southern Exposure” in the subject line of your
email. Refer to the image presentation page for details.
Slides: Slides should be 35mm. On each slide write the image list
number and artists name, title of work, media and dimensions.
Indicate top of work. Do not send glass slides, glass slides are almost
always crushed in the mail.

RETURN OF MATERIALS:
A self-addressed-stamped-envelope (SASE) must be included with
sufficient postage for the return of submission materials. Artists outside
the US who cannot obtain US stamps may add return postage cost to the
entry fee at a rate of $1.00US per ounce of mail. Materials submitted
without SASE and return postage will be discarded. To make sure you
have adequate postage, weigh portfolio materials and both envelopes in
advance.

NOTIFICATION:
Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than
May 26th, 2009. Notification will be made via email or mail with the
return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. All artists who
provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email
or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted to
exhibit.

KENNESAW, Ga.—The College of the Arts at Kennesaw State University is seeking nominations for its annual Flourish Awards, which honor individuals and organizations in the community who support, promote or participate in the arts in Metropolitan Atlanta and Northwest Georgia. Nominees are sought in four categories: arts leader, arts educator, public/community servant, and nonprofit arts organization or arts company.

Nominations should be sent by e-mail to arts@kennesaw.edu or via fax to 678-797-2426 by

5 p.m. on May 29. The awards will be presented at the college’s annual fundraising luncheon on Sept. 1 at the Cobb Eergy Performing Arts Center. Nominators should include the following information in their nominations: name and contact information for the nominee and a brief justification of no more than 250 words.

To qualify for an award, individuals or organizations should be well known in the community, should be living or currently operating, must be from Georgia or residing or operating in Georgia and should have greatly enhanced a particular arts field or the arts in general.

The arts leader category is open to performers, artists, presenters, designers, directors, or administrators working in an arts-related field or for a program or organization that provides direct support to the arts or arts education.

The arts educator category is open to P-12 art, dance, music or theater teachers who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have created or significantly supported projects that link the arts to other areas of the curriculum and/or projects that enhance the community.

The public/community servant category is open to elected or appointed government officials, civil servants, volunteers and philanthropists.

The nonprofit organization/arts company category is open to an arts presenter or arts agency of any size that is well established in the community and that has a commitment to both quality arts programming and community outreach.

Nominations will be reviewed by a community committee. Award recipients will be notified in early August.

SlowExposures 2009 A Juried Exhibition Celebrating Photography of the Rural South - Deadline June 15, 2009:

SlowExposures celebrates its seventh year as one of the premier juried photography exhibitions in the South. Held every year during the last two weeks in September, fine art photography by established and emerging artists captures the diversity, contradictions, and complexity of the rural South as it exists today.

Eligibility
This is a juried photography exhibition with two categories.
• Southeast
• West Central Georgia
Photographers are invited to submit up to four (4) entries in each
category. A panel of jurors will choose work from submitted
entries on the basis of creative excellence and interpretation of
the show’s theme. Pike Historic Preservation (PHP), Inc. reserves
the right to refuse to hang any work that differs markedly
from the slides/CDs or does not meet the jurors standards of
excellence.

Awards
Over $2,000 in awards will be available. First, Second, and Third
place cash awards awarded by the jurors in addition to Honorable
Mention Ribbons. A People’s Choice Award will be presented
the last day of the show.

Sale of Art
Sales will be encouraged. Pike Historic Preservation, Inc. will
handle all sales and collect a 30% commission on all artwork sold
as a result of this exhibition. All artwork for sale must be priced
by the artist and so stated on the application form. Please be sure
to include the 30% commission for PHP, Inc. in your price. The
7% sales tax will be added at the point of sale.

2009 Jurors
Annette Cone-Skelton is the co-founder and director of the
Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) as well
as an accomplished artist in her own right, best known for her
work in abstraction. She has pieces in the permanent collections
of more than 10 national museums including the High Museum
of Art. She is a graduate of the Atlanta College of Art (BFA)
and is a Ford Foundation Scholar. As native of LaGrange, GA
Ms. Cone-Skelton brings her own southern roots and her distinguished
career in collecting, documenting and supporting fine art
to SlowExposures 2009.

Tim Barnwell is a photographer based in Asheville, North
Carolina. His career has spanned 25 years as both photographer
and instructor, including eight years as Executive Director of the
Appalachian Photographic Workshops (1980-1988). His work is
in the permanent collections of national museums, including The
Metropolitan Museum, The New Orleans Museum of Art, and
The High Museum. He has published two books of his evocative
images of the Appalachians including “The Face of Appalachia”
and “On Earth’s Furrowed Brow”. Tim will be leading
this year’s Photography Workshop on Landscape Photography at
Towerhouse Farm.

How to Enter
Please complete entry form. A nonrefundable fee of $30.00 (up
to 4 images) per category must accompany all entries. Fee is
payable to Pike Historic Preservation.
Photographers may submit up to four (4) images in each of the
two categories, Southeast and West Central Georgia. All work
must be original and have been produced within the last 4 years.
Images entered in the West Central Georgia category must have
been taken within eligible county boundaries of: Pike, Bibb,
Coweta, Crawford, Harris, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe,
Muscogee, Spalding, Talbot, Taylor, Troup and Upson.

Photographs may be color or black and white using traditional or
digital or elements of both processes. All entries must be on 35
mm slides or CD. All CD images must be JPEG files no larger
that 2.0 MB in file size. The longest dimension may not exceed
800 pixels. All entries must be marked as follows: Category-
Photographer Name-Title. (Example: WCG-John Doe-The
South) In addition, slides must be marked as to front and top for
proper slide tray viewing.

Producer Is Chosen to Lead Arts Endowment

Rocco Landesman, the colorful theatrical producer and race-track aficionado who brought hits like “Big River,” “Angels in America” and “The Producers” to Broadway, has been nominated as the next chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, the White House said on Tuesday.

The appointment, which is expected to be announced on Wednesday, surprised many in the arts world. It ends months of speculation about who would be selected to lead the nation’s largest and most important arts organization.

The White House declined to discuss the appointment before the announcement. Mr. Landesman, whose appointment must be confirmed by Congress, also declined to comment.

“It’s potentially the best news the arts community in the United States has had since the birth of Walt Whitman,” said the playwright Tony Kushner. “He’s an absolutely brilliant and brave and perfect choice for the job.”

Choosing Mr. Landesman, 61, signals that Mr. Obama plans to shake things up at the endowment. While a major source of money for arts groups around the country, it has historically been something of a sleepy bureaucracy, still best known to some for the culture wars of the 1990s.

Since then, the agency has been trying to rebuild its image on Capitol Hill, along with its budget. The current allocation stands at $145 million, and though Mr. Obama has requested $161 million for 2010, that is still short of its high of $176 million in 1992.

Mr. Landesman, who would fill the post vacated by Dana Gioia, is expected to lobby hard for more arts money. But he is not famous for his skills as an administrator or diplomat. Rather, he is known for his energy, intellect and irreverent — and occasionally sharp-elbowed — candor.

In 2000, for example, he caused a stir by accusing nonprofit theaters of being too much like their commercial counterparts. And, as a producer of “The Producers,” Mr. Landesman created the controversial $480 premium ticket to combat scalpers.

“Rocco speaks his mind, which is probably one of the reasons he was chosen,” said Robert Brustein, the founding director of the Yale and American Repertory Theaters. “Rocco does not defer his opinions.”

As the president of Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns five Broadway houses, Mr. Landesman is accustomed to calling the shots, not working within a bureaucracy. Arts executives say this is a plus. “He is a great entrepreneur and producer and it indicates to me that the administration wants to have somebody in this position who will be much more than simply a distributor of funds,” said Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera. “The relationship between the government and the arts needs to be energized. It needs someone like Rocco.”

Mr. Landesman is expected to resign from his position at Jujamcyn, but to retain his ownership stake in the company.

His directness may prove refreshing to official Washington, and his affinity for country music, horse racing and baseball may help grease the wheels in his conversations with members of Congress on both sides of the aisle.

While Mr. Landesman has spent his career in the commercial theater, he earned a doctorate in dramatic literature at the Yale School of Drama and stayed on there for four years as an assistant professor. “It’s an odd choice,” said Mr. Brustein, who taught Mr. Landesman at Yale. “It’s certainly not one that I would ever have thought of because Rocco’s always been associated with the profit-making world and the N.E.A. is nonprofit.”

Though a creature of the for-profit theater, Mr. Landesman has put his force behind work that other producers might have considered too risky for Broadway, like Mr. Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Angels in America,” and the musical “Jelly’s Last Jam.”

“He’s really smart and he’s really savvy and will really fight if he believes in something,” said George C. Wolfe, who directed both productions.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Mr. Landesman had his undergraduate education at Colby College and the University of Wisconsin. In 1977 he left Yale to start a private investment fund, which he ran until his appointment as Jujamcyn’s president in 1987. In 2005 he purchased the company.

Rocco is married to Debby Landesman and has three sons.

All of Jujamcyn’s five theaters currently have shows running: the St. James (“Desire Under the Elms”), the Al Hirschfeld (“Hair”), the August Wilson Theater (“Jersey Boys”), the Eugene O’Neill (“33 Variations”) and the Walter Kerr (“Irena’s Vow”).

In recent years, Mr. Landesman has stepped back from active producing, although Jujamcyn still occasionally invests in shows. This year, the company made a $250,000 investment in the revival of “Desire Under the Elms” to help transfer the play to one of its Broadway houses from the Goodman Theater in Chicago.

Mr. Landesman’s nomination means a potential loss for Broadway underscored by the death, in November, of Gerald Schoenfeld, who had been chairman of the Shubert Organization since 1972. Mr. Landesman was among those who had begun to fill the role of elder statesman during this theater season.

Joe Allen, the theater district restaurateur, said that Mr. Landesman would be missed on Broadway, but that the industry would be lucky to have him in Washington. “To have a member of the club running the endowment is a good thing,” Mr. Allen said. “He knows the theater world. He knows how artists work, what their concerns are, what their personalities are like.”

Mr. Landesman met Mr. Obama before he was a presidential candidate and was a strong supporter and contributor to the campaign.

If confirmed, Mr. Landesman would be the 10th chairman since Congress created the endowment in 1965. Other names circulated as possible candidates included Michael M. Kaiser, president of the Kennedy Center; Michael C. Dorf, a lawyer who served on Mr. Obama’s arts policy team during the campaign; and Claudine K. Brown, the program director for arts and culture at the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

Mr. Gioia officially stepped down on Inauguration Day. Patrice Walker Powell, the endowment’s deputy chairwoman for states, regions and local arts agencies, has been serving as interim chairwoman since Feb. 2.

While previous chairmen have tried to argue the case for a stronger agency, this task will fall to the next chairman in an even tougher economic climate. “The day of the N.E.A. being this political football of the right — maybe those days are over and we’re going to start to take it seriously,” Mr. Kushner said.

Mr. Landesman is expected to be a vigorous and provocative face of the agency.

“Rocco is bored,” Mr. Brustein said, “if things just go routinely.”

Exhibition Theme:
Echo: Variations on a Theme provides opportunities for artists to explore and elaborate on the endless possibilities of a specific idea or theme as it unfolds and develops in the artist’s mind. Like the variations on a theme in a musical composition, the artist can revise the composition, color, line, texture, shape or media of the original theme in order to further the inherent conversation or dialogue with the viewer. Working in a series rather than on a single presentation of a theme acknowledges the natural process that ideas undergo as they illuminate, develop, change and give rise to related and new ideas.

Juror:
Ann Roth is gallery director and teaches color theory at Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina. She has held curatorial and administrative positions in universities, non-profit arts organizations and commercial galleries since 1976. She has served as Juror for numerous exhibitions, including the Town of Cary's Lazy Daze Arts Festival, Artspace, the Visual Art Exchange and the Raleigh Arts Commission. Ms. Roth is also a weaver. Her hand dyed and woven rugs have been exhibited at the NC State Craft Center, American Craft Council Southeastern Regional Exhibition and in Meredith College art faculty shows. She received her MFA in textile design from the University of Kansas and her BFA from the University of Michigan.

Requirements for accepted work:
1. All Two-Dimensional work must be appropriately and professionally presented and ready to hang. Information regarding hanging requirements at Meredith’s Gallery will be sent along with notification to accepted artists.
2. Three-Dimensional work must be stable on a flat surface.
3. Include special instructions for installation work, if necessary. Artist must handle any involved installations.

Eligibility:
Current and new members of the Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) are invited to submit up to six pieces of original art work. Accepted artists must be a paid-up 2009 WCA member in order to exhibit. ART QUILTS LOWELL 2009 is a juried exhibition, organized by the Brush Art
Gallery, to identify and encourage quilt artists. The exhibition will include art quilts
from artists throughout the United States and Canada. The exhibition will provide an
overview of some of the finest quilts being produced; it is a feature of the 2009
Lowell Quilt Festival August 6-9.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists who are residents of the United States or Canada

METHOD OF SELECTION: Digital images CD only (no slides or photographs)
will be juried by Sylvia Einstein, curator and internationally-known quilt-maker, and
Judy Becker, well-known contemporary quilt-maker, curator and juror.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Artists may submit up to three entries. A $35 non-refundable
fee made out to the Brush Art Gallery is required with entries.
• Only original art quilts completed within the past 4 years are eligible. All quilts
must be no larger in height than 5.5 feet or width 4 feet and must be ready
for hanging with a 3-6 inch sleeve (large enough to comfortably
accommodate a wood dowel or wood/plastic slat). All quilts must be
accompanied by dowels or slats. Dowels need hardware and slats should have
hardware or holes for hanging. Quilts that don’t meet these requirements will
not be accepted for hanging. Quilts should be clearly labeled on reverse with
artist’s name and title of quilt.

EXHIBIT CRITERIA: The curator seeks work (by women and men) made during a pregnancy, or within five years of the birth of the artist’s child. The work submitted does NOT need to be specifically about parenting or childbirth. The curator is interested in work that was made during the same period as the artist was also engaged with the thrills and problems of parenting.

This exhibition — the first of its kind — has already been discussed in a feature article in the Brooklyn RailNeoMaternalism: Contemporary Artists' Approach to Motherhood, by Sharon Butler, December 2008), and has been mentioned on several prominent art blogs including Art Fag City, Art21 Blog, and Creative Construction. Roughly one half of the exhibition will be comprised of work garnered from this open call, with the other half of the work included by special invitation of the curator. Invited artists include Sharon Thomas, Vicki Sher, Dana Lee, and Julie Heffernan.

GUIDELINES & ELIGIBILITY: Any artist, male or female, who has made work during a pregnancy or within five years of the birth of a child is eligible to submit made in that time period. Artworks in all media will be considered. The curator is particularly interested in work that results from changes in artistic processes or new thematic concerns that arise out of pregnancy. In other words, this work does not need to be specifically about childbearing or childrearing. The curator will be looking for interesting links in process and theme across the full range of submissions.

Generously Odd: Craft Now at Lexington Art League - Deadline July 31, 2009:

In an attempt to chronicle the unique territory currently being examined by today�s avant-garde craft artists, LAL invites artists/craftspeople to apply for an upcoming exhibition in the historic Loudoun House. Generously Odd: Craft Now will focus on contemporary craft objects that engagingly experiment with material, form and concept. While all craft media will be considered, the exhibition will place emphasis on works that explore abundant decoration, obsessive techniques, and peculiar narratives or concepts. Travis S. Townsend, artist, woodworker, and Lecturer of Art at Eastern Kentucky University, will curate the exhibition. The exhibition will be on view October 24, 2009-January 3, 2010.

$3000 Artist's Fellowship at Southeastern College Art Conference - Deadline August 1, 2009:

The Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) awards one $3000 fellowship to an artist or group of artists working together on a specific project. Membership is required. No restrictions are made by SECAC on how the fellowship funds are expended. SECAC requests that the fellows provide documentation of the project or work produced during the fellowship period (one year from receipt of fellowship money). Documentation may take the form of an exhibition at the subsequent annual SECAC conference, a catalogue or other publication form, an exhibition of the work exhibited at another institution during the fellowship period, a presentation or other proposed and accepted form of documentation. There is no fee for application for the fellowship.
