An update about WCAGA Exhibits and Drawing Marathons of 2015.

WCAGA Exhibits
WCAGA’s last exhibit of 2015 is currently showing at the Lyndon House Art Center in Athens GA. MARK is a WCAGA members exhibit, curated by Georgia Strange, a professor at UGA.

In conjunction with the MARK exhibit, Lyndon House Art Center sponsored two drawing programs; Sept 17 and Oct. 10. These ‘Draw Tables’, as they are called, are open to the public and our MARK exhibitors, in particular, have been invited to participate.

The Exhibit, MARK, is up till Oct. 10, 2015. We have 38 WCAGA members and 9 invited women artists from the Athens area in the show. The MARK exhibit is held in two gallery spaces, The Atrium and the Ronnie Lukasiewicz Gallery on the first floor.

WCAGA Drawing Marathons
The Drawing Marathon Program is finishing it’s 4th year. Initially, this was a one year program that simply kept going almost of it’s own accord. Our last Drawing Marathon for 2015 is taking place in Helen DeRamus’s studio at the Artists Resource Center in Marietta. This session has been dubbed Figure2Days. Our focus will be the human figure and the session will last Friday and Saturday (Oct. 2,3). Fridaywe will have a live model. We’ll spend the day on short poses that are meant to inspire our second day, Saturday’s, drawings.

2016
Exhibits
Upcoming for 2016, we have been invited back to Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkson’s Media Center’s 4th floor gallery in March. Dates to be determined.

Drawing Marathon
Our 2016 Drawing Marathon Program hopefully will continue to evolve new formats for this program to keep it challenging and inspiring.

A Note to our members:
I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you over the years because you have involved yourself in WCAGA programs. I hope you will continue to seek interaction with your fellow artists. If you are new to our organization, come and share your knowledge, excitement and vision with us.

Thank you

WCAGA BOARD REPORT

WCAGA Board Report

August 11, 2014

Sally Wansboro Eppstein was elected by the board to be vice president. This fills an important board position that has been vacant since January. Kate Colpitts, former vice president, became president in January when then-president Judy Parady left the position before the end of her term due to family issues.

We also now have a new co-treasurer. In the spring, Donna Horn agreed to share treasury duties with Ann Rowles. This was approved by the board.

Exhibitions

The WCAGA Members’ Show, “Layers”, opens at Georgia Perimeter College on September 11. There will be a catered reception.

On August 2, a WCAGA pin-up exhibition of work from various drawing marathons at UpStairs [ArtSpace] in Tryon, NC opened. Barb Rehg also has a solo show at the same gallery and attended the opening which she said was very well received. Our drawing marathons have inspired the artists in the Tryon area, spearheaded by WCAGA member Linda Hutchins, to hold a drawing marathon in Tryon.

Draw 4 Days

Our most ambitious drawing marathon will happen August 18–23. Over 14 WCAGA member artists have signed up for space to draw for 4 consecutive days at the Further Polycontemporary Gallery at TULA Art Center on Bennett Street. Some artists have arranged to share their space with another artist or a small group. If you have not previously signed up for a space, please drop by and see what’s happening. There will be a small space for drop-ins to work as well as a chalkboard area for one-day drawings! Feel free to Instagram it, blog about it, post a note on Twitter, and comment on WCAGA’s FaceBook page.

Opening—

Please come to the opening reception and see the results of a week of drawing in public. The opening will be 6:00–9:00 pm on Friday, August 22.

Artists Discussions—

There will be a discussion with the participating artists on Saturday, August 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

If you’re interested in knowing more about any of these or other WCAGA topics, feel free to contact Kate Colpitts, klfrost@aol.com.

Draw 4 Days

WCAGA and Further Poly Contemporary Gallery Present
Draw 4 Days
Place: Further Poly Contemporary Gallery at MOCA GA /Tula Art Complex
on Bennett Street
Dates: August 18 to August 23
Closing Reception: August 22, 2014 - 6 to 9pm
Artists Discussion - August 23, 2014 - 2 to 4pm
For the last three years the Women’s Caucus for Art of GA has had an ongoing Drawing Marathon Program meant to be a respite from demands of an individual’s own art process. The artists gather at one another’s studios and spend the day drawing; however they wish, whatever they want and with materials of their own choosing. The purpose: to return to a simpler process and just allow the experience to generate ideas, release oneself from restrictions of ongoing work and enjoy the company of other artists while doing so.
Beginning August 18, WCAGA members will participate in a four day drawing marathon
at Paul Light Jr.’s Further Poly Contemporary Gallery, located on Bennett Street in the MOCA/Tula Art Complex. Further Poly Contemporary maintains a commitment to a unique and eclectic program. Working with emerging, mid-career and established artists, Further is an ever-evolving context for exhibitions,  lectures, gatherings, and informative presentations that enrich the community's relationship to the arts.
Over the years there have been dozens of formats for Drawing Marathons. Presently, MOCA GA has a dynamic, ongoing Drawing Program, directed by Angus Galloway, that celebrates the many aspects of the drawing process. www.mocaga.org

While that is an ongoing program, WCAGA’s Draw 4 Days is meant to be a one week program that has multiple purposes. Foremost: to bring a fundamental (not necessarily simple) art process to the viewer as it unfolds. Additionally, we want this to be an education and a celebration of a process that humans have engaged in for thousands of years. Drawing has many uses. It can be a way to journal about ideas of concept, methods of construction and solutions to problems or simply the end goal.
Our format for this Drawing Marathon: Each day, images of the work in progress will be posted on WCAGA’s Facebook page. Writers, artists and the public will be encouraged to blog and visit. Engaging the artists in dialogue is encouraged.
On August 22, WCAGA will have a closing reception to unveil the results of our Draw 4 Days journey and on Saturday the 23rd, we will have our exhibit open and the artists will be present to discuss the process, concept and reason for participation. We hope you will join us, on line and in the space.

The reading material is a jumping off place for the discussion.

Bringing something tasty to nibble on or drink is always nice, but not required.

At this meeting we will decide what to read next and when to meet again.

Drawing Marathon
Dates: July 27 and August 24
Place: Barb Rehg’s Studio
Time: 10 to 3pm

Please contact Barb Rehg at brehgstudios@bellsouth.net to reserve a place. I can hold as many as 7 people in my studio. I have wall space as well as flat surfaces. I have drinks and usually plenty of food but you are always welcome to bring your own. These are both Saturday dates. I have found many of you have commitments during the week and that Saturdays and Sundays seem to be best. We have been following the format set down last year. We’re working on paper, using neutrals and leaving the content totally up to the artists discretion. I look forward to seeing you and working amongst you. I had hoped to change it up a bit but it seems the original format still works. Next year, however, we definitely should try some new formats. We have at least one fall session planned but we’ll announce that date in the August newsletter.

Minutes WCAGA Board meeting February 5, 2012

MINUTES WCAGA February 5, 2012

  • Next Board meeting Sunday, March 25 at Spruill from 4:00 to 6:00. All members welcome.

Annual Membership Meeting/Holiday Party

Should the Holiday Party be combined with the Annual Membership Meeting/should it be in
December? Topic to be discussed again in the future.

Appearances/Web and Blog

We are looking for graphic design members who would help coordinate the look of our web
site with the blog.

Photos Requested

Kate is always looking for photos for the Newsletter. That also serves to archive them since the
documents are saved.

Drawing Marathon

Marathons will happen multiple times throughout the year at different sites, starting with the
first one in March. Results of the marathons may be shown at an Art Share late in the summer
or early fall. Details to come; check the web site, blog and/or Facebook. Barb Rehg, Chair.

Art Share

We are looking for a new chair to organize the Art Shares. Susan Ker-Seymer has done a great
job of chairing for the last year (or more) and would like to step down. For more information,
contact Judy Parady or Susan Ker-Seymer.

Book Club

Turnout increases! Next is March 18 at Vicki Martin+s house. See the February Newsletter (link
on the web site) or blog for details.

National Juried Exhibit

If you want to be a part of this you should contact Barb Rehg, Exhibits Chair, and join the
Exhibits Committee. Expect a national call for entries in 2013. Our working title is -Material
Witness+. The juror has not yet been selected. There will be a catalogue. To process the entries,
should we use a commercial online service like CafÄ?

The Little Red Journal

This is a national project that we have decided to participate in. One of the national chapters
started this; one book goes around the country and artists in that chapter fill the pages in
their section. It will come to us in September but you can start working on a piece before then
to attach to the page. It+s very small (art no larger than 4+h x 3+w x 1/4+thick), but some are
doing fold-outs. 29 members can participate. Sign-up will begin on March 3 at Midnight via
email to Barb Rehg, and getting a spot is first-come, first-served. There will be an email reminder
notice the Monday before March 3, and another Mail Chimp email will go out when all
29 spaces are reserved. Eventually the finished book will be auctioned off at the WCA National
Conference in NYC in 2013. See web site and/or blog for more.

Funding Guidelines

We voted on and approved guidelines for granting funds in response to individual artists+
requests for help with specific projects.

NEW BUSINESS

Representative to the Chapters Council at the National Board Meetings

WCA National requests that a designated -chapter representative+ (as opposed to also being
the President or other officer of the chapter) attend the winter National Board meeting
as part of the -Chapters Council+ to present information about what our chapter is doing. It+s
always held at the National WCA Conference. From that body, three people are elected to be
part of the national board; if elected, you would also be expected to go to the summer board
meeting. We may be able to provide a small stipend to offset the travel expenses of a WCAGA
representative. Please contact Judy Parady or Ann Rowles if interested.

Attracting Younger Members

It was suggested that we should be making more efforts to attract more young women
members. There is a relatively new national initiative for younger members, the Young WC, an
internal caucus of the National Women+s Caucus for Art with a focus on college students and
young professionals. (See their program listing for the 2012 WCA Conference.) It was agreed
that we have much to offer but we need to address topics of interest to young artists. How to
do it? To start, ask the young artists that you know.

Elections discussion tabled until next meeting.

You can be a hosting studio, where artists come over to your studio and draw. You can be a participant by being a marathon drawer. You can also be both a host and drawer.
