Always something to do in Atlanta

Looking for something to do?

This weekend is busy, busy, busy. Here is just a couple of events that I am aware of that some of our members are taking part in.

Lair takes place on Friday, November 18, 6:30pm - 8:30pm. This event takes place at the Abernathy Arts Center.
The Little Things Mean A Lot happens on Thursday, November 17, 6pm - 8pm at the Swan Coach House Gallery. This is a group show with more than three hundred small art works.

Our wonderful Book Discussion finds place on Sunday, November 20, 3pm - 6pm. The Artist Joan Mitchell is this  discussions topic. You can use  and read anything to come and take part in this event. S

For more information you can have a look at the Calendar.

I also have two birthday parties this weekend but I am sure going to try and get to these shows and especially the book discussion. I am thinking of taking my Knitting.

Lets get to know our Members - Marie Weaver

Marie Weaver is a talented and creative Sculptor, Print Maker and want more of her art. She is also the WCAGA’s Secretary.
After a successful career as Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she decided to turn to the production of art exclusively. She was the Featured Artist of the McClain’s Printmaking Supplies. She’s been part of  WCAGA’s Brainstorm show in Atlanta, GA and Tryon, NC. Her work has been shown in Brooklyn. NY, Abruzzo. Italy, Sofia. Bulgaria, and Washington. DC to name a few. She was selected into the Residency at the Hambidge Center and the Fulton County Arts Council. She has been published in Art Papers, The AJC, and The Birmingham News. She is represented by Narrowland Gallery in Chatham, MA. The list goes on and on.

Her work can be describes as whimsical, quizzical, sometimes a little freaky but at the same time serious and thoughtful and most of all sincere. Her artist Statement is short but explains it well.

“The essence of my work is in concepts of vulnerability and protection. I’ve worked in various media but focus primarily on ceramics, relief printmaking and hand-made books. All are process-oriented media that have some commonality. They each combine the physicality of natural materials, the creativity of drawing and color mixing, the intellectual satisfaction of a puzzle, and the hazard of chance.” ( Artists Website/Statement)

It feels wonderful to be in such company. Please visit her website for more art, information and contact details.

Lets get to know our Members - Temme Barkin-Leeds

Sparked by events like the Darfur genocide and atrocities, Temme Barkin-Leeds uses her art to give social comment on video games where violence are the key ingredient. She believes that if you make art you should change social and cultural believes. With a degree in Art History and Studio Art she has a strong foundation to create art that speaks to the viewer on an emotional level.
Her latest series deals with the dominance of violence in video games, specifically the first-person shooter genre. She uses image clips from games like “Medal of Honor 2010” and “Call of Duty” as a canvas on which she throws and scrapes paint, sand and blood. She includes images from real war situations, usually injured people, to bring the consequences of violence to the foreground.
In “Farther Than The Russians Did” she contradicts war veterans in wheel chairs with soldiers holding guns. The act where blood flows is left out but the ramifications are strongly suggested.

Temme Barkin-Leeds has been shown in art exhibitions nationwide and received several awards. She represented the state of Georgia as a member on the Millennium “Gift of the Nation” committee of the Friends of Art and Preservation in Embassies in 1999.

Lets get to know our Members - Mary Frances

Mary Frances is an artist and a poet. Her life in creativity took over after she left the corporate world. She studied under professors from Georgia Perimeter College and Georgia State University. Mary Frances uses a variety of materials in her work, pencil, ink, ebony, charcoal, watercolor and oil. Her work can be describe as soft, whimsical, and dreamy. Her work is explorations, reflections, and adventures in different artistic mediums and genres. Mary Frances has this great poem available on her website. It is called "Mature Art Student." I copied the poem here because it deals with everything the maturing woman faces everyday and it reminded me of the Martha Wilson Exhibition "I have become my own worst Fear." Please visit Mary Frances' Website for more information and artwork and contact details.

Mature Art Student

  Remembering beach-bright days,
short shorts, and roller skating,
I decide to paint
my silhouette.
Quickly, I multiply mirrors,
strip, then look.
 What has happened to me?
I see where the latest
forty pounds resides.
My ribcage has pillows!
If I hang from the door frame,
will my waist return?
Yes, sides smooth as sand.
Silly girl, you can’t draw
with your hands overhead.
 And then there’s my butt—
depression descends.
My once round bottom
splits into two squares.
 Forget the mirrors.
I throw on a fat-man’s T-shirt.
 I’ll draw my feet instead.
                                      -Mary Frances-

Kind Regards
