ATLANTA (Jan. 8, 2013) -- Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Art Galleries present “Women Enchanting the Muses: Selections From The Cochran Collection,” an exhibition opening Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2013, in Trevor Arnett Hall on the university’s main campus, 223 James P. Brawley Dr., S.W., in Atlanta.  The exhibition is free and open to the public and runs through April 30.  Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday – Friday.
       “Women Enchanting the Muses” continues CAU’s celebration of the 60th anniversary of the unveiling of the “Art of the Negro” mural series by Hale Woodruff.

Women Enchanting the Muses, Co-curated by CAU Art Galleries director Tina Dunkley and CAU art professor Christopher Hickey, the exhibition comprises 40 selections from the collection of works on paper by African-American women artists from the extensive American art collection of Wesley and Missy Cochran in LaGrange, Ga.  There is a broad and enlightening range of prints, drawings, collages and paintings by Faith Ringgold, Rochelle Puryear, Maren Hassinger, Selma Burke, Betye Saar, Margo Humphrey, Valerie Maynard, and many others.
 Complementing this exhibition are portraits of several of the acclaimed female artists featured in a recast of Woodruff’s all-male assembly in “Panel 6: Muses.” The 8ft. x 8 ft. oil pastel mural was created by CAU students in Drawing Class CART 204, under the direction of Hickey.  The class project was inspired by a recurring public query as to why Hale Woodruff did not include women artists when he painted the series in 1950-51.Fondly described as “unsung heroes” and “pioneering art collectors from the Deep South,” the Cochrans have amassed a major collection of 20th century masters.  Central to the Cochrans’ mission is making the art of eminent and obscure artists accessible to all populations.  Their collection includes works by Jacob Lawrence, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Hale Woodruff, James Rosenquist, Alexander Calder, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Joan Miro, William H. Johnson, Willem De Kooning, George Segal, Helen Frankenthaler, Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauchenberg, Camille Billops, John Biggers, Mildred Thompson, and regional artists such as Freddie Styles and Leo Twiggs.
 The Cochrans will discuss the development of their remarkable collection at 3 p.m. during the Sunday, Jan. 20, reception.

Exhibition The exhibition Material Witness seeks to broadly represent artwork defining our time.  Organized by the Georgia chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art in collaboration with Agnes Scott College, the exhibit will present the perspective of women artists from across the United States working in a variety of media. Through their art they process the world around them, their work becoming a document of these times.

Eligibility Open to all self-identified women who are 18 years of age or older living in the United States. All work must be original and completed in the past three years. It is the juror’s discretion to choose single or multiple works from each artist’s submission.

Media To support the focus and breadth of the theme Material Witness, all media will be considered including, but not limited to two or three-dimensional works, video, installation, and performance.

Catalogue A full color catalogue of the exhibition will be printed. Each accepted artist will receive one complimentary copy; additional copies will be available for purchase. An online exhibit of the accepted works will be featured on the WCAGA.org website for one year following the opening of the exhibit.

Awards $1500 in cash prizes, as chosen by the jurors, will be awarded during the exhibitions opening reception: First prize, $750, second prize, $500, third prize $250.

Entry Fee Each artist may submit 3 images for a non-refundable fee of $30 for WCA members, $40 for non-members. Each additional image, including detail images, are for a non-refundable fee of $5 each, limit 6 images total. The entry fee does not cover shipping expenses. Credit cards are accepted via online submission only. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia. WCA members must use a discount code at the online (CaFE) checkout to qualify for the $30 entry fee.  Email to: code@wcaga.org with your membership number to obtain the code.

Agreement Submission of an entry to WCAGA constitutes an agreement on the part of the entrant to all the conditions set forth in this prospectus. WCAGA reserves the right to reproduce accepted entries for publicity purposes. Accepted work that differs from the digital juried image may be excluded from the exhibition. Please do not send images that contain borders or text that is not part of the original work.

Online Submissions Digital submissions, and entry fees are accepted via CaFE’ (Call for Entry) at www.callforentry.org.  There is no additional fee to use the CaFE online application system. File formatting info is available on the CaFE website. Applications must be received by Midnight April 1, 2013. (MST)

Mailed Image Submissions Submissions must be postmarked by March 15, 2013. Submissions postmarked after this time will not be considered. Artwork must be submitted in digital format. CD’s will not be returned, therefore original files should not be sent. Clearly label discs with artist’s full name and email address.

IMAGE FORMAT: Artists must submit digital entries in JPEG format on CD only. Image files should be labeled with the artist’s three initials followed by the corresponding entry number. Example: jlp1.jpg. Images should be oriented correctly, the pixel size approximately 1500 x 2100 with images no larger than 10 Mb, 300ppi. Detail images must include the word Detail in the file name. Example: jlp2detail.jpg.

VIDEO FORMAT: Original video can be any length. Entries need to be a sample that is 3 minutes or less saved in .mov  format that is a maximum of 720 ppi.

STATEMENT: Please include a text document not exceeding 250 words. Label the file with your three initials and TEXT. Example: jlpTEXT.doc. Artist statement may be read to the jurors, and will be available in the gallery for all selected artists.

Let's get to know our Members--Ashley L. Schick

Today it is my privilege to introduce our next WCAGA member,  Ashley L. Schick. 

She is an young but accomplished artist that works with paper and textiles. She is entering her last year of residency as one of The Creative Project "Artists-in-Studio" winners. Her work examines stories. Stories, told in her family but stories that have universal (United States of America) tone and meaning. Embroidery, book and print making create a necessity of a deep personal engagement. Inherent in her work is the Question and Answer of how the telling and retelling helps to from an individual.

In the last 8 years Ashley L. Schick accumulated a first-class art carreer from  a SCAD Honors Scholarship to Purchase Prize. Her work was published in "Artbound", "First Impressions", the "G.W. Review 28" and in 2012 "The Process of Printing with Ashley Schick".   Hor more of her achiements have a look at her Resume.

2013 is the year for the WCAGA National  Juried Exhibition, "Material Witness". Submissions for this show will begin on January 7, 2013. The Exhibit will open on September 26, 2013 at the Dalton Gallery of Agnes Scott College, Decatur, GA. The Prospectus will be available on www.wcaga.org











The WCAGA Reading Group will meet on January 13, 2013 at 3pm. The location is Vickie Martin's House. The book to read is " Frida's Bed" by Slavenka Drakulic. 

2012 in the Spotlight

For the WCAGA 2012 was a great year. With continuing activities and events throughout the past year.

THE READING CLUB started off with a meeting in January featuring the artists Louise Nevelson, Helen Frankenthaler, and Kara Walker after the successful exhibition at Alan Avery Gallery. In March they discussed the work and life of Agnes Martin and in April Anne Truitt. The artist for May was Betye Saar. In July they investigate the work and lives of women in Surrealism including Leonora Carrington, Maya Deren, Frida Kahlo, Remedios Varos and more. September Meeting had a look at  "The Creative Habit" by Twyla Tharp. Then  October was selected to review the "The Body Artist" by Don DeLillo. The Reading Club organizers: Vidkie Martin and Maggie Bethel.


The program, ART SHARE, is a forum for members of WCAGA to show their work for the
purpose of gaining feedback and insight, a sort of a critique, and a place to network with other
artists and art professionals. This program met quarterly and moved from the private home or studio setting to the Spruill Center for Arts. This program continues to grow thanks to Kathy Abernathy Meliopoulos.


WCAGA DRAWING MARATHON. This program is designed as a year long project. The participants will be engaged in the drawing process at designated locations on specific dates. You may sign up for more than one session and it is fine to choose different studios each time. As artists you will create work based on your personal concepts and method of working, therefore how you choose to draw, what you choose to draw is ultimately your choice. This is a free program for our members. Non members may be invited to participate in the process.The marathon part of the program happens in two ways.  Working in a space, foreign to one, creates a special dynamic. It is a challenge but it is about more than that. The act of making work in the presence of others creates a shared experience, creates a memory and that can be as enriching as the actual process of drawing. Under the wing of Barb Rehg this program flourishes with more plus minus 30 studio drawing marathons all over Georgia during 2012.

The PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM was held in August 2012. The topic was Social Media for Artists. The following WCAGA members made this workshop possible by sharing their knowledge Vickie Martin, Marilynn Brandenbergur, Anita Stewart, and Helen DeRamus and myself, Corlia Potgieter Kock. Judy Parady our current President was the moderator. 

As For ARTSHOWS during 2012, WCAGA had two Art Exhibitions. The first WCAGA Member Show was  “correcting for drift” at Jim Cherry Learning Resource Center Gallery from February 27 to March 30, 2012. The second is the Visual Poetry Exhibition Dates from December 6, 2012 to January 25, 2013 at the Atlanta Public Library Central. This venue is part of the First Thursday Art Walk. We are thankful to Barb Regh for creating opportunities for the WCAGA. 

WCAGA was part of THE LITTLE RED BOOK. The Little Red Book is a collaborative book of images by WCA artists.  The book will travel around the country this next year to participating chapters and WCAGA will have it from September 21 to October 22.  The individual pieces are restricted to three inches tall by two inches wide and should be no thicker than cover stock weight paper.  While there is not a specific theme, 2012 is the fortieth anniversary of the organization.  When completed, the book will be exhibited at the New York WCA conference in 2013 and auctioned among WCA members.

Several of the WCAGA members was juried into National WCA Art shows and featured on the WCA Website. Within the WCAGA members their are a lot going on with members being part of shows, being represented by Galleries throughout America and members presenting workshops and classes. WCAGA is looking for someone to run the Professional Development Program. All these programs will continue in 2013 and coming up is The RagDoll Project organized by  Loretta Paraguassu. A Special thanks to Marjorie Jordan for keeping up with the members, to Ann Rowels for being the Treasurer and Judy Parady for leading us in 2012. 

The year of 2012 also saw the interactive WCAGA Website came to life. On this site you can view images of current members and there work, see what events is scheduled. And see how to become a member.

Apply for Ignite Scholarships for 2013 - Due Dec 17th

Through donations from individuals and funding by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, C4 Atlanta is able to offer 20 artist FULL scholarships from January 2013 – June 2013 for Ignite. Scholarship recipients must be City of Atlanta residents or be affiliated with an arts business within the city of Atlanta.

Please complete the following application. Applicants will be selected by merit in addition to need. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Applications are due December 17, 2012.

Let's get to know our members--Ruth Schowalter

Ruth Schowalter lives her life with a spirit of inquiry and “joie de vivre.” This wonderful light radiates in her work and her Blog. She calls herself an Art Pilgrim on a creative journey.(Coffee with Hallelujah) In her work I see intricate designs with bright colors and wonderful lines and shapes. What a joy to look at. Topics in her work vary from Mother Earth to the mysteries of the Burka and Hijab, Myths, Religion and Inner Searching. 

Learn and enjoy with her, the enigma of life, art, language, and Science. Explore the travels of Paleontologist Barbie. She recently did the Illustrations for “The Misadventures of Maria the Hutia” published on July 27, 2012.
