Entry fee: $35 (includes membership in Friends of Emory Visual Arts)

Jurors: Julian Cox, curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and Jason Francisco, associate professor of photography and chair of the Visual Arts Department at Emory University

What is home, and where is it? What does it mean to look for home, to find home, to lose home, to be at home? In whose company does home arise? Under what circumstances? At what cost? How is “home” being impacted by the current economic crisis in America? The Visual Arts Gallery at Emory University invites submissions to a juried photography exhibition on these and related issues: images (and combinations of images and words) that investigate, comment on and test various dimensions of “home”—in its familiarity and unfamiliarity, its pleasures and discomforts, its communal and personal aspects.

LE FLASH ATLANTA 2009 CALL FOR PROPOSALS - DEADLINE: JULY 10, 2009

A little history…

Once a year, Paris lights up the city with art for NUIT BLANCHE. Toronto does the same with all night art revelry. In Santa Monica, GLOW transforms the pier, the beach and Palisades Park for art encounters from dusk to dawn.

One misty night in October 2008, Le Flash sparked this same ephemeral energy in Atlanta’s Castleberry Hill District. The premier of Le Flash Atlanta featured over 40 projects in Castleberry’s streets and galleries, vacant lots and windows, warehouses and rooftops. The event illuminated the district from dusk to midnight, creating a unique cultural experience, and leaving a trace of magic and mystery in the minds of those who were there.

Learn more about Le Flash 2008 here: http://www.leflash-atl.com/

And here: http://burnaway.org/2008/10/le-flashhighlights/

This year—rain or shine—we return to Castleberry Hill, on Friday, October 2 with Le Flash Atlanta 2009, the opening event of Atlanta Celebrates Photography!

Curatorial Team: Cathy Byrd and Stuart Keeler

Fantastical art and creative events will again fill a night out in the neighborhood. Atlanta expects to be showered with the light and sound of installations, performance art, poetry readings, music, video projections, an iron pour and art happenings of all sorts.

Artists, we await proposals for projects centered on light!

Imagine light as a solid, a liquid or a vapor elemental to your project! Think of light through an experimental lens, as a reflection or as a projection. Show us how you can animate and energize one space or a whole neighborhood!

We invite proposals for experimental site work and performance by independent artists with fresh concepts.

Artists are requested to:

1. site their work and obtain permission from the property owner

2. address safety issues and the potential for inclement weather

3. locate and secure electrical and water hook-ups, if needed

4. be dynamic and prepared to express the essence of Le Flash!

Most projects will be self-funded and self-produced.

At their discretion, the curators will award modest stipends to support the production of a limited number of ambitious proposals with budgets that exceed the artist’s ability to self-fund.

Timeline:

June 5: CALL FOR PROPOSALS

July 10: Proposal Deadline

August 2: Interviews

August 7: Project Selections Announced

September 13: Mandatory Meeting + Site Visits

2009 WILLIAM H. JOHNSON PRIZE - DEADLINE: JULY 31, 2009

Applications for the 2009 William H. Johnson Prize are now available online at http://www.whjohnsongrant.org

Please note that the due date for all applications is July 31, 2009, several months earlier than in past years. Applicants are advised to take note of the change so that they do not miss the deadline. The 2009 William H. Johnson Prize is 25,000 USD and the winner will be announced in September 2009.

The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that seeks to encourage African American artists early in their careers through its annual award, The William H. Johnson Prize. Early career African American artists who work in painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and/or new genre are eligible to apply.

William H. Johnson, an African American artist born in Florence, South Carolina in 1901, is the namesake of the Foundation. He moved to New York as a young man to study at the National Academy of Design, and though he was acknowledged as the most talented artist in his class of 1926, he was passed over for a traveling scholarship, most likely because of his race. Rather than see Johnson struggle in the United States, his teacher, Charles Hawthorne, gave Johnson 1000 USD so that Johnson could travel to Europe. This act of faith and generosity was pivotal in Johnson's life, for it provided the seed from which his career flourished.

In the same spirit, the William H. Johnson Prize is intended to encourage the best artists working today. Past Johnson Prize Winners include Laylah Ali (2002); Nadine Robinson (2003); Kori Newkirk (2004); Dave McKenzie (2005); Edgar Arceneaux (2006); Rodney McMillian (2007); and Jennie C. Jones (2008).

Echo: Variations on a Theme at
Meredith College (presented by WCAGA) - Deadline May 25, 2009:

Exhibition Theme:
Echo: Variations on a Theme provides opportunities for artists to explore and elaborate on the endless possibilities of a specific idea or theme as it unfolds and develops in the artist’s mind. Like the variations on a theme in a musical composition, the artist can revise the composition, color, line, texture, shape or media of the original theme in order to further the inherent conversation or dialogue with the viewer. Working in a series rather than on a single presentation of a theme acknowledges the natural process that ideas undergo as they illuminate, develop, change and give rise to related and new ideas.

Juror:
Ann Roth is gallery director and teaches color theory at Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina. She has held curatorial and administrative positions in universities, non-profit arts organizations and commercial galleries since 1976. She has served as Juror for numerous exhibitions, including the Town of Cary's Lazy Daze Arts Festival, Artspace, the Visual Art Exchange and the Raleigh Arts Commission. Ms. Roth is also a weaver. Her hand dyed and woven rugs have been exhibited at the NC State Craft Center, American Craft Council Southeastern Regional Exhibition and in Meredith College art faculty shows. She received her MFA in textile design from the University of Kansas and her BFA from the University of Michigan.

2. Three-Dimensional work must be stable on a flat surface.
3. Include special instructions for installation work, if necessary. Artist must handle any involved installations.

Eligibility:

The exhibition entry fee does not cover the WCA membership. For new or renewal WCA membership see: www.nationalwca.org

Rules of Entry:
1. Entries will be judged from digital, Jpg format,300 dpi, size 4” x 6”. A maximum of six works may be submitted in either of the following two formats:
a. One series of 3 to 6 images to form a
thematic body of work
b. Two series of 3 images, each series
to form a thematic body of work

2. Each 2D work may NOT exceed 36” including framed images.

3. All media except video are accepted.
3-D work will be placed close to a wall due to traffic flow through the gallery space. Nothing may be hung from the ceiling.

“Mother/mother", curated by Jennifer Wroblewski, Pertaining to Parenting and/or Childbirth for Fall 2009 Exhibit at A.I.R. Gallery

DEADLINE: JULY 1, 2009
Proposals must be postmarked or hand delivered to the gallery on or before July 1, 2009 at 6pm. Proposals submitted online must be received by 11pm on July 1, 2009.

EXHIBIT CRITERIA: The curator seeks work (by women and men) made during a pregnancy, or within five years of the birth of the artist’s child. The work submitted does NOT need to be specifically about parenting or childbirth. The curator is interested in work that was made during the same period as the artist was also engaged with the thrills and problems of parenting.

This exhibition — the first of its kind — has already been discussed in a feature article in the Brooklyn RailNeoMaternalism: Contemporary Artists' Approach to Motherhood, by Sharon Butler, December 2008), and has been mentioned on several prominent art blogs including Art Fag City, Art21 Blog, and Creative Construction. (

Roughly one half of the exhibition will be comprised of work garnered from this open call, with the other half of the work included by special invitation of the curator. Invited artists include Sharon Thomas, Vicki Sher, Dana Lee, and Julie Heffernan.

GUIDELINES & ELIGIBILITY: Any artist, male or female, who has made work during a pregnancy or within five years of the birth of a child is eligible to submit made in that time period. Artworks in all media will be considered. The curator is particularly interested in work that results from changes in artistic processes or new thematic concerns that arise out of pregnancy. In other words, this work does not need to be specifically about childbearing or childrearing. The curator will be looking for interesting links in process and theme across the full range of submissions.

For more information, please visit the A.I.R. Gallery website.

Townsend, artist, woodworker, and Lecturer of Art at Eastern Kentucky University, will curate the exhibition. The exhibition will be on view October 24, 2009-January 3, 2010.
