Exhibits, Drawing and Little Red Journal Status Reports
WCAGA March Report on
Exhibits, Drawing Marathon and Little Red Journal
March 31st is take down for the first exhibit of the WCAGA members for 2012.
Correcting for Drift was held in the GA Perimeter College on the Clarkston campus in the Jim Cherry Resource Center Exhibit Gallery. As always Don Dougan did a wonderful job installing our members’ work and creating a dynamic display.
Thirty-three of our members entered works. Ann Rowles crocheted/fabric soft sculpture, Linda McCune’s wall mounted construction, Vickie Bethel Thayer’s digital photo montage, Karen Phillip’s acrylic painting, Maxine Hess’s encaustic work and Kathy Meliopoulos’s multi media stitched work are just a few I can mention that describes the variety and depth of this exhibit.
Our next member show will be in December 2012 at the Main Atlanta Public Library, downtown on the First Thursday Art Walk venue.
The Drawing Marathon will be a year long project. Our first sign up will be for the month of April. I will post the project in its entirety on our website along with the dates, times and places of the host studios. If you are interested in learning more or wish to sign up, contact Barb Rehg by email at: brehgstudiosatbellsouth.net
Our goal is to provide an experiential program designed to bring us back to the foundation of our art, Drawing. A secondary benefit, I hope to come out of this, is working alongside and with other members of our organization. Over the years since I first joined, the interactive programs that I have had a chance to participate in, have enabled me to become friends with so many of you and to learn from this wonderful group of women artists. I hope the programs we are offering this year, give you that same experience.
The Little Red Journal came out of the Women’s Caucus for Art National Organization.
You can read details on the website. Presently we have 22 members signed up to participate. Only 29 spots are open for this project. This journal is making the rounds through a number of the chapters. Each chapter has a month to work on it and a month for which they are creating drawings. At next year’s National Convention it will be seen and auctioned off. If you are interested contact Barb Rehg by email at: brehgstudiosatbellsouth.net

Let's get to know our Members--Candy B. K. Schille

I received an interesting email from one of our New Members. I am glad to share this letter and pictures of her artwork with you.
Coastal Reflections

Candy B. K. Schille moved from the Northwest to rural South Georgia where she teaches drama, gender studies, and eighteenth century British literature at Georgia Southern University and writes short stories and poetry. She finds herself quite merry and her recent foray into the visual arts is another expression of that.
Her visual work has only begun since summer 2010. The whole thus far, which she thinks of as “Possessing the Secret of Joy” (after Alice Walker’s novel), represents life as a surprising but exciting experiment. The figure represented is (at this point) usually a self-portrait of sorts.

She uses mixed media, whatever comes to hand: pencil and colored pencils; water color; ball point, gel, and artist’s pens; wax crayons; and even nail polish. She’s after a feel of nimble integrity.
She says, “My work has to do with my feeling that Georgia is a place of inner and outer exploration, I often feel the presence of history in its landmarks and the presence of a kind of numinous “genius of the place” in its landscape and plant life than transcends history. It is really about the space where the inner and outer worlds meet. Thank God I found it.”
She has shown in Statesboro and St. Simons and is a member of National Women’s Caucus for the Arts and its Atlanta-based chapter.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WCA'S INTERNATIONAL CAUCUS
As soon as Sherri Cornett announced her International Caucus meeting at 4 p.m. at our annual conference in L.A., I knew I had to be there. There can be nothing more important about our group than taking it global. From an artist's perspective, you have to become known outside of your home town. You have to be known nationally. Beyond nationally, you have to be recognized internationally to have any impact at all. The position of women artists is fragile professionally. Women tend to be taken lightly in the gallery scene and dismissed as not as important. The number of women who are being recognized is growing, but not in proportion to the impressive art that is being created. We have a mission in this respect. However, the mission is FAR greater than just building careers. We speak for other women and represent their causes. Our Philadelphia chapter is making a big splash with its Rag Doll exhibits protesting sex trafficking. Personally, I've written my check and joined the ranks of that chapter. I want to stand with them and help them make some noise. Currently, the news from state capitols, Washington, D.C. and GOP candidates is getting worse. The positions of conservatives should bring us all to our feet screaming in protest. The movement that is behind the denigration of women and the limitation of our rights is unspeakable. There are so many reasons to oppose it I won't even start to do that here. I'm sure all of our informed, female readers have enough information in that regard. Looking outside of the United States, the world picture is a very sad one for women. There have been some improvements over the years, but so much needs to be done. If we can make any impact at all, we can justify our existence and our art. The message that Sherri is going to the United Nations and joining the Art and Culture Committee there, is extraordinary. She has put out a call for data that she can share with this committee and build our position with them. All of us in our various chapters need to participate. We CAN make a difference. Sherri is also working on getting passes for other WCA members who have the ability to be present at meetings in the U.N. headquarters in New York. This is a big one. Just as impressive was the participation of Korean artist Hye-Seong Lee. She is an At Large Member of WCA and very interested in organizing exhibits for WCA in Korea and China. Hye-Song flew in to L.A. for the annual conference! All of us need to get behind these efforts and make the art that will put WCA in an ever stronger position to support women's rights. | |||||||

Who out there has NOT been offended lately?
I am watching the news and looking at this page. We're the Women's Caucus for Art in Georgia. Where is our comment? Our statements? Our backbone? Isn't it time we stood up for the rights of women in a more unified, forceful manner? We're a fairly large group of well-educated, talented women. In Philadelphia, they are making a big statement against sex trafficking. We are not taking advantage of our position and I, personally, think that we should. Because of the activist position in Philadelphia, I have been drawn to their chapter and added that membership to my "belongingness." I want us to be equally important in a chapter that sits in the middle of a state where women are being denigrated in the Capitol by any number of legislators who would take away our rights.
