The Bookworm Artist

"Shadows Bright as Glass" by Amy Ellis Nutt

This is part of the WCAGA Book Discussion Group.

Kathy Meliopoulos shares today's book title with us. Shadows Bright as Glass by Amy Ellis Nutt. Kathy Says she found this book fantastic and enjoyed it a lot.

This is the story of artist Jon Sarkin who had a life changing experience. Started his life as a calm chiropractor but after a small artery moved less than a millimeter in his brain started having severe neurological trauma. After the operation that was supposed to save him he had a stroke which changed his personality into that of an obsessive creator of art. I've started to read the first cople of pages and it poetic and beautiful written.

Here is some of the reviews written about this book that you can fin on the Amazon.com page as well:

“Shadows Bright As Glass is a fascinating glimpse into the mysteries of the mind, brain and creativity. Jon Sarkin wrestles with the great questions of the search for self, questions that concern us all.”
—Alice Flaherty, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, Harvard Medical School

“Fascinating…A mind-bending and inspiring book.” —Kirkus (starred review)

“Nutt exquisitely twins the inspirational and vexing story of Jon Sarkin, brain-damaged chiropractor turned renowned artist, with an account of humankind’s eternal pursuit of the soul…Nutt’s compelling narrative makes this is a real page-turner.” —Booklist (starred review)

Did Art save him?

I can't help but think of all my artists friends who struggles with the same desire to create art. We know that feeling of something that is wrong when we do not create.

Let's get to know our Members - Weekly (Cecelia Kane)

Cecelia Kane conducts her Life with Art. 1and2and3. 4and5and6. This leads to a magical life. Clothes becomes protection or enablers as with her “Abuse Cape” or “Bravery Jacket.” Obsession becomes a work of art on Facebook. In this project she recorded how she feels on Facebook, describes how she feels in words and later she transferred these images to embroidered handkerchiefs. This takes the idea of smiley faces or mood faces to a higher level. Gives the emoticon a personal touch.

She has also become known for “The Hand to Hand Project.” This project started out where Cecelia Kane painted a News Headline or news story on stuffed gloves. Later on she included other artists and it became a national project reaching out far. She is currently on “the Hand to Hand Roadtrip Across America” returning each artist’s glove or hand-art to them. She received Elizabeth Firestone Graham and Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia Grants in 2009 to publish a catalog of the Hand to Hand Iraq War Artist Project.

To see more of her work or for contact details please visit her website.

Let's get to know our members - weekly (Marjorie Jordan)

Marjorie Jordan says that she want her work:” not only to illustrate the amazing creativity, life affirming beauty and complexity of Nature, but to win the viewer over to a sense of wonder for the natural order.”(Artist’s Website - Statement) Using oil, pastel, and altered photographic images she choose to show the magic in nature, giving back the miracles that we find in everyday happenings in Nature.

The growing of plants, the reflection of trees in water, a simple sea shell, a cob on the corn become food from the gods. In her latest work the human figure plays a diminished role. She uses hands to represent the abundance of nature back to nature. Where Nature gives to us, she is in a sense giving back to nature and the universe. Jordan uses her work as a tool, beautiful tool to change people’s perspective.

Her work can be find in collections nationwide. Jordan has shown her work in various galleries like the Barbara Archer Gallery and Gallery 413 in Atlanta, GA. Silvershotz(International Journal of Fine art Photography) published her work. The Atlanta Journal Constitution also published her painting titled “Pear”.

This is part of the WCAGA Book Discussion Group.

This weeks book contribution is by Ann Rowles. Thanks!

This is a valuable book for anybody who is interested in art history. It is edited by Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard. It’s contributors list people like Judy Chicago, Linda Nochlin and Miriam Schapiro.  It’s a landmark for for female Art History. It covers female art since the 1940 and also has a paragraph on the Women’s Caucus for Art’s creation.
