WCAGA 2012 Drawing Marathon #1

A couple of images and what the participating artists have to say.

One of my drawings during the April 30 session of the WCAGA
Drawing Marathon at Pam Beagle-Daresta's house.
Not as pixilated as it looks-need a higher resolution photo. But you get the idea...

Another Drawing Marathon piece -
this one in silver/goldpoint, whereas the other is in graphite.
Yesterday was my first hosting of A marathon drawing session
with the WAC , My studio was filled with open sharing
of everyones artistic energy, Thank you this was my mornings marks...

Drawing Marathon yesterday (Saturday) - plein air style.
Three of us out to draw, a long day but marvellous,
despite the ticks and bugs. Thanks for the "push" to get us out to draw.
Two drawings from WCAGA drawing marathon

Will be looking for walnuts at Brasstown!

Surviving as an Artist

I have been watching this museum and wishing I was in the capital to be able to take part in their excellent program.  I'm attaching a good part of the email I just got because it might be an inspiration. Also, the Artist's Guide fits in with a discussion we had at our last book club meeting; namely, how do you make a go of it as an artist?

Business Practices for Artists: how to make an artist's life work

Friday, May 11th @ 6:30pm

ABOUT THE TALK:
This two-hour talk will go over the fundamental skills artists need to develop and sustain a professional life. Providing an overview of her widely acclaimed book,The Artist's Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love,  Jackie Battenfield will cover tips on how to plan, promote, fund, organize, and build community. There will be time to address audience questions.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:
Author, Jackie Battenfield, an artist who has supported herself from art sales for over twenty years, teaches career development programs for visual artists at the Creative Capital Foundation, and Columbia University. She is represented byAddison/Ripley Fine Art in Washington, DC where her work is  on view through May 26th.  http://www.jackiebattenfield.com/

The Professional Development Speaker Series is a succession of lectures and workshops given by established artists and art professionals to aid in the artistic and entrepreneurial development of artists. All talks take place at Hamiltonian Gallery, 1353 U Street, NW in Washington, DC 20009.

Through "meet-the-artists" events, studio visits and other exclusive benefits, this dynamic group of art enthusiasts and patrons drives the artistic success of emerging visual artists and contributes directly to the vibrant contemporary art scene in Washington, DC.

Bookworm Artist--Betye Saar-- WCAGA READING CLUB

Betye Saar is the topic of WCAGA Reading club’s meeting on May 20. I have to admit that she was my choice. I have always been fascinated by people that can take assemblage and collage up to an art form. It was not so long ago that a man at an artist talk in one of Atlanta’s well-known Galleries, angrily accused women of always reverting to craft. I was surprised by this since I did not realize that this could still be an issue. He said that more female than male artists do their shopping at places like Michaels and Hobby Lobby.

Looking at Betye Saar can be freeing since she broke the line between so-called high and low art and helped to redefine Art. This is of course my subjective opinion.

My search for books on Amazon lead to the following books.

The new book price is a little on the expensive side at $60 but a used copy can be bought for as low as $10. This book can give you a you a comprehensive overview of her work as well as that of Feminism, contemporary art and California culture and politics.

will be available on May 11 2012 for $24. This also gives a comprehensive look at Betya Saar’s career.

Family Legacies: The Art of Betye, Lezley, and Alison Saar is available at $25, This book gives information on Betye Saar and her daughters. It explores how these three artists interpret, identity, sexuality, spirituality and other stereo types associated with the female in their art work. This book seems like a must have to me.

is available for $160 new, but is available used for $25. Lucy Lippard is one of the Contributors to this book.

For more information on Betye Saar links online have a look at the May 2012 Newsletter or the WCAGA Blog Calendar Page. Information on time and place for the May Meeting is also available in this Newsletter.

I hope to see you at the Reading Club Meeting.

The Day on Fire Apocalypse in Contemporary Art

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Department of Art & Design at East Tennessee State University invites artists to submit work in any media on the subject of the apocalypse. Any work that directly or indirectly relates to visions of the end of the world, aftermath, nuclear winter, localized images of collapse, upheaval of thought, and post-apocalyptic depictions are welcome in this exhibition that takes a wide-angle perspective to the theme. The end of times has been a preoccupation for artists for centuries – this exhibition expressly planned for 2012 frames this theme at the doorstep of the Mayan and Nostradamus “Dooms Day” prophecies.

Works will be jointly curated and juried by the Slocumb Galleries’ Exhibition Committee.
