Lets get to know our Members - Cindy Sheffield Michaels

CINDY SHEFFIELD MICHAELS

Today's Artist is photographer and editor Cindy Sheffield Michaels. She is from Mississippi, received her BA in Spanish from Hendrix College and her MA in English from Georgia State University.

She has an eye for details that plays an important role in her editing work as well as her photography. In an interview for the examiner.com, she says that she takes pictures of objects that appeals to her on a personal level. If she likes it she will take a picture of it. She does it in such a way that it is not recognizable with the first look. She will tell people what it is when they try to guess what it is. She enjoys the game of guessing the viewer will play when looking at her work and the emotional reaction they have when seeing her work. Her dad played an important role in her growth as a photographer and instilled a curiosity in her.

Her latest show was in July at The Solarium in Historic Rite, Decatur, GA. Wonderful news is that she is soon to be a mother. Various magazines published her work for example, Form, The Furnace Review, GSU Review and Eudora Welty Newsletter.

Have a look at Cindy Sheffield Michaels Website for more details, artwork and contact information.

Till next time,
Corlia

Lets get to know our Members - Callahan Pope McDonough

Callahan Pope McDonough creates work reminiscence of cave paintings but with more finesse and complexity.
She says:”I fantasize of cave paintings and how they were a part of daily life, how they recorded, mourned, and celebrated a tribes’ days and experiences. I look for that balance of elegance and crudeness in my work...”
McDonough lives and works as an artist in the Atlanta area for over 30 years. She draws inspiration from her work in psychology and social issues, her personal experiences and her relationship with her son to create symbolic art. She manages to transfer the rawness of creativity into sophisticated marks, color and lines.
She received the “First Governors Award”. Articles and reviews of her work appeared in  Art Papers, Artforum, Better Homes & Garden and the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
An extension of her art found comfortable nest in her floorcloths. You can find more info on those here

CDC Visit Continue

Bacteria, Diatoms and Cells as exhibited in Riffe Gallery
Before we started with the Actual Tour of "Off the Beaten Path" Show, we followed Louise Shaw, the curator of the CDC Museum, to view two permanent installations by Eva Kwong. "Swarm" installed next to the main gallery and a Stairwell installation named "Bacteria, Diatoms and Cells"
"Swarm" installed on the CDC Wall next to the Main Gallery

Eva Kwong's work was firs shown at the CDC Museum in 2006 during the "World of the Unseen: Science meets Art." exhibition. Kwong found most of her inspiration from an admiration of the world within and around people and nature.
She was born in hong Kong. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and she is currently teaching at Kent State University of Ohio.

In Kwong's words: "I like to make things. It is my way of experiencing and understanding the world through my own filter. It is like "tapping," a term used by the bushman to refer to a sense of an animal or water nearby. It is a gut-felt, intuitive impulse to put things that I think about into concrete form." (from Shakerag)

The Bookworm Artist

More Great book titles from Vickie Martin.

After I read "Priceless" – I read "Stealing Rembrandts"

While I’ve read about a lot of these thefts in other books, I enjoy this book because I learned a lot about Rembrandt.   Not only was it about the thefts, it was about his history, his work and why the continue to be targeted by thieves.    In fact, there was one stolen just this week! Read the Article on CBS News.

See the list of books up to date on the Bookworm Artist Page

Goal of this blog post will be to create a useful, inspiring, and art related book list. The post will go out saying who submitted the book titles and why they find it useful or inspiring or interesting. Please try to keep all book titles related to art, art history, art Stories(fiction), Art Technique, Art Bio or auto Bio, Art Documentaries. The titles of the books will go onto a Blog Page which you can reach by clicking on a tab called the “The Bookworm Artist” at the top of the WCAGA blog. Please send Corlia a message if you have a book title to share.

WCAGA visits the CDC Museum.

CDC website
I must admit that I was not aware of the CDC Museum or Gallery before this visit with the WCAGA. Going to this museum is a little like going through airport security but once you are through it is a thrill and completely worthwhile. The Museum was originally called the Global Odyssey and was established in 1996. The name was changed to David J. Sencer CDC Museum, honoring the longest serving director of the CDC.

CDC website
The first thing that caught my attention after going through security was the collection of different sizes of flat screen monitors, showing various images and information about the CDC. Then you see the beautifully layed-out space for the Gallery of the Museum.  Louise Shaw, the curator of the CDC Museum gave us an introductory talk and short video. Afterwards she took us through the exhibit. Louise Shaw is an animated speaker who made the whole experience interesting. Although the show "Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women, and Art" and the Artists used in this show can certainly stand on their own and hold your attention. Louise Shaw made it apparent that the CDC's present mission is not to just prevent and control diseases but also violence. That is why a show like "Off the Beaten Path" fits in perfectly within the walls of the CDC.

Artworksforchange website
Randy Rosenberg put together this traveling show as part of the Art Work For Change. "Off the Beaten Path" is just one of a couple of temporary and traveling exhibitions that this organization produces. Louise Shaw said that she put her job on line to get this art show but that it had been rewarding and meaningful. This show traveled from Norway in 2009, to San Diego, USA, to Mexico in 2010, to Chicago in 2011 and now finally to Atlanta, USA.

For more information on the Artists please stay tuned to this site and the next blog post…
