The Bookworm Artist

This weeks book is "Priceless: How I went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Stolen Treasures" written by Robert K. Wittman and John Shiffman"
This is a book for those who loves Adventure, Spy, Detective Novels. I am one of them. This is also non-fiction, since it was written by an FBI Agent. Robert K. Wittman worked at the Philadelphia Field Division from 1988 - 2008. He received special training in art, art history, antiques, jewelry and gems. He played an important role in the creation of ACT (Art Crime Team). This book can be seen as a memoir. He has a Security Company called ROBERT WITTMAN INC. You can do an Art Crime Investigation Seminar with his Company. He has been covered by the news on several occasions. Above is a video where he has an interview on Gooday Philadelphia, for this novel.

Next week something more serious and intellectual...

Regards CORLIA

SketchCrawl

Posted by Picasa
The WCA of Georgia participated in SketchCrawl #32 on Saturday, July 23. SketchCrawl is a happening that was taken from the "PubCrawl". Instead of visiting pubs we go out and sketch or draw or do small watercolors. This is not something that just happened in Atlanta, GA USA, but worldwide. SketchCrawl was started by Enrico Casarosa, San Francisco, California and you can read more about what he has to say at the SketchCrawl Website

The WCAGA SketchCrawl was organized by Barbara Regh and Marilynn Brandenburger and we met at the Atlanta Water Gardens. Above is some of the interesting features this place have that could interest the artist. Look out for the next SketchCrawl date.

Lets Get to Know our members - Weekly (Chris Lewis)Don't let me fall

Chris Lewis had a successful career as a freelance Illustrator but then in the early 80’s decided to become a full-time Artist. She moved from the hard-edged glamorous world of Coca-Cola, American Express to the world of Clay... She says: “Creating sculpture was a natural outgrowth from advertising illustration. Although both professions are outlets for creative expression, illustration is inherently limited by the need to sell a product, whereas fine art allows the exploration of personal objectives.” (Artist’s website
Life, world and Nature dilemmas and dramas inspire her as an Artist. By creating art about and around these predicaments and vicious circles she comes to understand the situations better and then with her work, shares this understanding with the viewer.
Don’t Let Me Fall
Parking Lot Angel
Her “Anonymous Angels” series was inspired by Hurricane Katrina. Not only was her son in New Orleans around this time but they also had damage to their Condo. A couple of junk plastic she found among the debris became the wings of her first Angel.
Her “Addiction” Series was fueled by her son’s struggle with his drug addiction. The Struggle to accept this addiction, to overcome it and love one another. Her addiction work was on show at the Jim Cherry Learning Resource Center Gallery in 2010.
Chris Lewis’s work can be seen at the Swan Coach House Gallery in “The Summer Swan Invitational” Show.

The Bookworm Artist

"JOAN MITCHELL: LADY PAINTER" by Patricia Albers

Joan Mitchell was an Abstract Expressionist Painter and one of the few female artists of her era that obtained critical and public praise. Her work was exhibited alongside those of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Hans Hofmann. She is of crucial importance in Art History.

This is why today’s book title is “Joan Mitchell: Lady Painter” written by Patricia Albers. This title was submitted by Vickie Martin.

Let's get to know our members. HUNTER LEVINSOHN

Hunter Levinsohn is not afraid to offend. It is this tendency that causes the scandal in Carrboro with her painting “Trying to Make Black and White Out Of Red, White and Blue." Read the news version here.
She describes herself as a Cassandra. Telling the truth, pointing out the obvious that other people close there eyes to. She uses a variety of media to bring over a point. In all cases she research extensively, this is especially true with  “ Looking Through Time’s Window.”
The viewer can understand her work better when you know the story behind the art and it is a joy to read the stories. Stories like “White and Don’t make it Hard on yourself” or “The Ritual of Buying Shoes.”
